Members of SIGQ are researching the details of Queensland Railways use of the Ordinary Staff Safeworking system, looking for evidence of the unusual or non-standard staffs that once existed. Standard colours and shapes were initially Red Diamond, White Square and Blue Round, with Yellow Half-Diamond added later. There were also Green staffs used in conjunction with the above shapes, and also non-standard combinations such as Red Round and White Round.
There was a program within the railways to standardise the Ordinary Staff colour and shape combinations but no exact details of how this was done have been found. Was a Red Round Ordinary Staff just repainted blue to make it a standard Blue Round?
The aim of this project is to find examples of non-standard Ordinary Staffs which still exist today. The method used is to accurately measure any remaining Ordinary Staff, either in use by QR or in a private collection, and see if there are any that do not match the QR Standard Drawings that are known exist.

Below is a form with the measurements required by the research team. If you have an Ordinary Staff in your collection or in a museum, please measure it as per the drawing below and fill in the form. Measurements need to be accurate and in mm or 1/16th of an inch. NOTE: Measurements to the centre of the pins and slot are required.
